Where is Kibblestan?

Picture
Kibblestan is in my imagination, yet reflects the world around me. The idea of Kibblestan came to me shortly after the 9/11 attacks when, like most Americans, my sense of security was shaken and a chunk of innocence lost. I remember holding my daughter, who was only a few months old at the time, and wondering just what kind of world was she going to grow up in? America was invincible, wasn't it? Attacks like that didn't happen to us . . . and yet they had.

After 9/11 I started watching the news more often, reading more non-fiction and paying more attention to the world around me. I was shocked to learn how women were treated under the Taliban, and it was a sober reminder of how great we have it in America, with freedoms that are so easily taken for granted.

I started thinking more and more about what leads a country to tyranny and what has kept America free . . .

And Kibblestan was born.

I'm just an average Mom, and not an expert on anything. But I do love my country, and what America stands for. I sometimes worry that with all the divisive rhetoric we have today, the message of just how great America is may be getting lost in cynicism instead of being passed down to the next generation.  Sure, America's not perfect. No country is. Countries are made up of humans, not saints. But when you look at the history of civilization, and what life is like in many other countries even today, America sure has a lot to be proud of.

But are our kids getting that message?

Perhaps they should take a journey into Kibblestan.

"Lucid, enchanting characters populate this diverting story."
