I love to meet with readers or future authors to discuss all the possibilities of becoming a writer. I currently offer two different PowerPoint presentations geared toward third-graders on up. Each presentation lasts roughly thirty minutes followed by a question and answer session, and can be tailored to your specific needs.

"Why Writing is Magic (and how YOU can be an Author, too!)"

This is a motivational presentation to get students excited about writing as I share a bit about my own personal journey and tell them about the writing and publishing process (including editing). Some of the points I discuss:

  • Why I think writing is magic.
  • Why the writer's journey begins in childhood.
  • What are the two words needed for any story to exist and what is threatening these words--something that could have prevented a very famous book character from ever existing.
  • What are the two most important things you must do to become a writer.
  • And much, much more.

"Andrea's Top 5 Tips for Creating Story Magic"

This presentation delves into the craft of writing fiction as I share various writing tips I have acquired throughout the years. Topics discussed include:

  • Show, Don't Tell
  • Making your reader care
  • Use all five senses
  • Point of View
  • Strong Beginnings

If there is a specific topic you would like me to cover, I am happy to oblige. Please contact me with your request!

Story Magic Workshops

This is an actual writing workshop where I present the above mentioned topics in conjunction with writing exercises for students to complete. It can be used to complement a Language Arts curriculum in a classroom setting or be an activity for an after school writing club. While the main topics covered are listed above, if you have a specific writing topic you would like covered I am happy to include it and tailor the workshop to meet your needs.

Kibblestan in the Classroom

The Chronicles of Kibblestan is an excellent book series to use in the classroom, as it is very kid-friendly entertainment while touching on some of America's most basic founding principles. There are even discussion questions provided in the back of each book that can spur some ideas for conversation. Order The Chronicles of Kibblestan to read in the classroom, then invite Andrea to visit for a casual classroom chat and answer your students' questions. Students are thrilled to meet the author of a book they have already read, and it is a total blast to answer questions specific to the book and the characters featured within. Children are delighted to hear where authors get their ideas and the inspiration for their characters, and it provides motivation for students to start stories of their own. To order for the classroom please contact me directly to receive a bulk discount.

Zoom

If you are located outside the Dallas/Fort Worth metro area or do not have time for an in-person visit, I am always happy to Zoom!

Other Speaking Events

I am also available to participate in panel discussions or small group conversations about writing, publishing or anything else you might think of. Libraries, community groups, scouting troops, homeschool groups ... Contact me and we can figure it out!
Rates
Having had many conversations with educators regarding the challenges of limited budgets, and being a mom of two children in public school, I understand that often schools simply do not have the funds to pay for an expensive Author Visit. That is why I try to keep my speaking rates very competitive and also offer an option for schools to have me visit without it affecting their budgets. Click here to find out more!

Testimonials

"I highly recommend Andrea Rand’s writing workshop. It was a  great presentation that kept students actively engaged and
a great way for students to learn about the contributions of one of our talented community members. The presentation highlighted writing strategies and goals which reinforce our classroom instruction and which align with the fourth-grade writing TEKS. The slideshow was fun and unique which help the information “stick” with the kids. The presentation shared great ideas that we can implement immediately within the classroom."

"My students were captivated as Andrea Rand took them on the journey to become a published author.  Her presentation was very engaging and captured the students' attention.  They learned so much about the writing process.  She motivated the student to want to write and create their own book.  I would highly recommend Andrea as a guest speaker!"
